Toga party! Introduce your character while wearing your mask and name tag. "Meet and Greet" activity on yellow sheet. If you missed class, get this yellow sheet from the homework box and turn in for credit.

Introduction to Greek theatre. This story is complex, so I recommend that if you missed class you do some research to understand the background of the story before you read. Also, you MUST be willing to do the work of going to the end notes at the back of your book in order to understand the play. I explained strophe and antistrophe in class, but if you missed, these terms will be Greek to you (pun intended). Do research!

HW:
Read pgs. 49 (yeah, it starts there) through 65
CHS IHS -- Come ready for our toga party with your toga and name tag

Thursday, October 9, 2008

THURS. 10/9 SOUTH IHS AND MONDAY 10/13 CHS IHS

Look at comma usage in "Eats, Shoots and Leaves"

Get vocabulary words for "Oedipus." Assignment for the first 10 words: Find or draw a picture for each of the ten words. You can download pics from google (but be careful! Often google images don't really seem to have much to do with the word they're supposed to represent), cut a pic from a magazine or newspaper, or draw one of your own. NEATLY tape, glue, or staple each picture onto a half sheet of paper, and put the vocab word and your name on the back of the paper. You should come to class with 10 pieces of paper, each a half sheet.

Get directions on toga/name tag assignment. If you missed class, you can google "how to wear a toga" and come up with directions, but DON'T go out and buy material. Wearing a sheet is fine, but think about how to do more than throw a sheet over a pair of jeans and tennis shoes. Wear a T shirt without logos underneath or a tank top of swimming suit top; wear leggings or tights or yoga pants and some kind of sandals. Use a brooch to pin it, or, if you use a safety pin, pin it underneath and make things look neat.

I passed out info on a character from the play "Oedipus" or a Greek god/goddess, and you'll represent your character at the Greek party next Tues (alpha) or Wed (omega).

Then you began work on a mask that represents your character.

HW:
GET VOCAB PICTURES

AT THE PARTY, YOU CAN EARN EXTRA CREDIT FOR BRINGING GREEK FOOD -- DOLMAS, PITA BREAD, GREEK CHEESE, ETC. DON'T SPEND MORE THAN FIVE OR SIX DOLLARS! IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE MONEY FOR THIS, PLEASE TALK TO ME BECAUSE LACK OF MONEY WILL NOT STAND IN THE WAY OF YOUR BEING ABLE TO DO THIS.

FRIDAY 9/26 SOUTH IHS AND MONDAY 9/29 CHS IHS

Go over homework on blue sheet that required you to rewrite four paragraphs into smooth sentences with no run ons.

Vocab game to learn the next 10 words on the list. If you missed this, pick up a sheet from the homework box in the room. That sheet contains my definitions of the next 10 words and instructs you to HANDWRITE -- NOT TYPE, AS THAT LEADS TO JUST CUTTING AND PASTING FROM THE WEB -- TWO ORIGINAL sentences for each word.

Discuss symbols in the novel and then draw a symbol on a sheet of plain paper. If you missed this, you can do it at home. Here's the grading criteria: Choose a symbol from the novel (fire, jungle, conch, glasses, pig's head) OR one from society -- but not overused symbols such as a peace sign, a cross, or athletic logos. Fill the half sheet with a colorful drawing, showing that you're willing to go slowly and create a neat image. Write your first and last names in the lower right hand corner. You might find it useful to look at a picture of a conch, fire, jungle, etc as a model for what you're drawing.

HOMEWORK:
Do vocab assignment above

If necessary, finish your symbol and hand it in next class

Short lecture on the history of punctuation. (imaginerunningeverythingtogetherwithnospacesorperiodsorcapitalletters)

Put stickie notes in your Writer's Inc books under sections you think you'll need/want to use

I told the class that many students made an error in the setting assignment that I wouldn't count off for, but I'll count off if it's wrong in the character assignment you're doing for next class. Here's the problem: When citing the page number for a quote from the book, DO NOT write (pg. 72). Just write (72). Put ONLY the actual page number in parentheses, and then put the period AFTER THE PARENTHESIS, just like I did above.
Example:
"Ralph was a tall, sandy haired boy with the broad shoulders of a swimmer" (3).

Quiz on Chs 7,8,9. Grade and discuss in class, esp. who Simon represents as a larger cultural figure

Work in groups of 3 to write 3 DISCUSSION questions based on the chapters we've just read, then join with another group and decide which of the combined 6 questions is best. Circle that question, and give papers from both groups to me to staple together. IF YOU MISSED CLASS, YOU SHOULD ON YOUR OWN COME UP WITH ONE DISCUSSION QUESTION FOR CHAPTER 7, ONE FOR 8, AND ONE FOR 9. No need to answer the questions -- just pose it (ask it).

HOMEWORK:
Read Chapters 10 and 11
Complete character assignment
